Genji Shimada first appeared in the video game Overwatch, released in 2016. He is a cyborg ninja and a playable hero character.
Once a carefree playboy, Genji was nearly killed by his brother, Hanzo, during a conflict over the family's criminal empire. Overwatch intervened, rebuilding Genji with cybernetic enhancements.
Initially resentful of his mechanical body, Genji found peace through training with the omnic monk Zenyatta. He now fights to dismantle the Shimada clan's criminal activities and strives to reconcile his human and machine sides.
